Letter to the Editor

Ignore hardliners

Ashok Mehta

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Constitution’s mockery in the name of religion” (November 8 ) by A Surya Prakash. The Government should simply ignore the mullahs and their pseudo-secular cohorts and table a common civil code Bill in Parliament. Article 44 enjoins the Government to do that and it should follow the Constitution’s directive.

The Muslims must become secular in the real sense and adopt laws that are meant of all citizens of the country. They cannot insist on separate laws for themselves. They should not claim special status merely because they are a minority. In a democratic country like India, there cannot be any privileges or special rights on account of religion.
