Hostility and good relations cannot go side by side

MC Joshi

This refers to the report, “Emboldened Pak shows more aggression at the loC” (August 11). Pakistani troops killed five Indian soldiers at the line of Control in Jammu & Kashmir, on which Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed shock and said that both the countries have to work for good relations.

Within four days, in a major ceasefire violation, the Pakistani Army fired 7000 rounds of heavy ammunition and mortar shells on Indian posts along the loC. Needless to say, firing, unprovoked and uncalled for, seems to have become a regular feature. Mr Sharif, his good intentions to forge friendly ties with India notwithstanding, should first exercise control over his Army, as hostility and good relations cannot go side by side.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's anticipated meeting with Mr Sharif makes no sense in the present circumstances. It will merely fuel further anger against the UPA Government, which has already earned the ire of the people for being soft with Islamabad, which has continued to mock us and take our concerns with a pinch of salt.
