Hillary Clinton must now leave no stone unturned

Azhar A Khan

This refers to the editorial, “The Democratic stand-off” (January 20). Even as the local polls show that Mr Bernie Sanders is ahead of US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire, on her national showing until now, Ms Clinton is considerably ahead of her peer. The Democrats are, therefore, not much concerned about her candidacy, given the two States of lowa and New Hampshire going to polls on February 1 and February 9 respectively. This will set the real tone for the campaign ahead.

However, Ms Clinton cannot afford to be complacent. She will have to leave no stone unturned to surpass Mr Sanders in winning over the left-progressive vote-bank either and keep a considerable hold on the Black and the latino electorate as they had voted en masse in favour of Mr Barack Obama in the 2008 election. Thankfully, Ms Clinton is a staunch votary to Mr Obama's flagship healthcare legislation and vehemently supports the latter's pet-issue of gun violence, while Mr Sanders has no alternative plan in this regard.
