Hemmed by erring ministers and apathetic bureaucracy

Shailendra Kaul

This refers to the editorial, “Akhilesh in blunderland” (April 26). The position of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is akin to that of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Just as the full onus of acts of omission and commission and governance is with Mr Singh even as Congress president Sonia Gandhi dictates terms and remote controls with no responsibility, so also is Mr Yadav's situation. The young Chief Minister too is trying to run a Government, while his father and his extended family control the party and issues diktats.

The Ministers in Mr Yadav's team know very well that he can take no action against the wishes of his father, hence they are shooting their mouths off without thinking of the consequences and embarrassing him.

Despite his sincerity and attempts to revamp governance, Mr Yadav lacks the experience to control the unresponsive and lethargic State bureaucracy. Sadly, change of political guard has not brought about a change in the bureaucracy's attitude.
