Sir — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has aptly touched on the crucial issue of road accidents in his Sunday’s Mann ki Baat. The cashless scheme for the first 50 hours should gradually be extended to accidents on all major roads, especially in crowded towns and cities, and not confined to the national highways. Hospitals located near the highways should possess adequately trained manpower and life-saving drugs. Ambulances with ready oxygen cylinders should be made mandatory.

The proposed road safety Bill should focus on educating the public and creating awareness among them on the do’s and don’ts in road safety. People should be made aware of the Supreme Court ruling, which has directed the police not to harass good Samaritans when they rush to help accident victims.
