Letter to the Editor

Handle basics

Bal Govind

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Plight of state-run schools” (August 31). The intent of the Allahabad High Court was right when it said that Government servants must send their wards to Government-run schools. But considering the pathetic state of affairs at these schools, I am not sure whether Government servants will oblige. They will find some way or the other to bypass the order. The need of the hour is to improve infrastructure in state-managed schools and make teachers and staff accountable.

It has been observed that in Government-run schools which are in far-off places, many teachers do not even report to work, and if they do, it is only to mark their attendance.
