Government should go the whole hog to save Jadhav

Ganapathi Bhat

This refers to the editorial, “Big mockery of justice” (April 12). Pakistan appears to be playing with fire because the decision to award death penalty to former Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav is illogical, immature and fraught with danger. Except for one doctored video-tape of ‘self-confession’, there is no proof against Jadhav. Pakistan's efforts to equate Jadhav with the slain Ajmal Kasab merely because of the ‘confession theory’ is despicable. While Kasab's heinous crime of butchering innocent citizens and police officers is well-known, the international community is in the dark about the details of Jadhav's guilt.

The sentencing comes at a time when the simmering tension between the two neighbours have shown no signs of abating. India's decision not to release about a dozen Pakistan prisoners, saying “it was not the right time”, is a harbinger of things to come. Meanwhile, the issue will be an acid test of the Indian Government's diplomatic skills and maturity quotient. The Government should go the whole hog in saving Jadhav.
