Futile unity

Ganapathi Bhat

Sir — This refers to the report, “6 men give birth to Janata parivar” (April 16). People of the country can see through the designs of these politicians, some of whom were bitter enemies till the other day. Their agenda is narrow and opportunistic. The so-called Janata parivar has only one common minimum programme: Be anti-Narendra Modi. Politicians like Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, lalu Prasad Yadav and Mr Nitish Kumar are struggling to save their own bastions.

While the Janata parivar leaders cite examples of 1975 and 1989, when the unification attempts clicked, they conveniently forget that the circumstances were totally different then. Despite their belief, there will be little consolidation of votes in the favour of the newly-formed party, because the people have learned the advantage of cutting across religion and caste.
