Fresh election

MC Joshi

Sir — Though the Bharatiya Janata Party had secured 32 seats in the Delhi Assembly election held in December 2013, it refused to form the Government because it did not have the numbers. The newly formed Aam Aadmi Party, which had secured 28 seats, then formed the Government with the support of the Congress which had eight seats in its kitty.

However, AAP leader and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal quit after 49 days in power on a trivial issue. Perhaps, he had his eyes on the Union Government.

However, after his lok Sabha plan fell flat, Mr Kejriwal started demanding a fresh poll in Delhi and even approached the Supreme Court in the matter. On reports that lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung was likely to ask the BJP to form the Government in Delhi, AAP leaders met President Pranab Mukherjee and requested him to stall the move.

It is true that the lt Governor can ask the single largest party in the Assembly to form a Government and prove its majority on the floor of the House within a specified period.

But the BJP doesn’t have the requisite numbers. It is also not in its interests to form a Government by unfair means. Delhi needs a fresh poll.
