Flawed policy

KV Seetharamaiah

Sir — Pressure is growing on the US Administration to reach out to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. This would naturally be a setback to the anti-Modi lobby which is working overtime in the US and in India to ensure that there is no change in the US policy on extending a visa to Mr Modi.

But the growing sentiment is in favour of the US to engage Mr Modi, and that could set the ball rolling for the Barack Obama Government to reconsider its decision. The US cannot deny Mr Modi a visa if he makes it to the post of Prime Minister.

Will the US Administration snap ties with India if Mr Modi becomes Prime MinisterIJ Of course, it will not. The position of the US will be awkward if Mr Modi declines to visit the US, in response to an official invitation, after he becomes Prime Minister.

The United Kingdom and the European Union have changed their attitude towards him. The US visa ban will definitely become infructuous if Mr Modi becomes Prime Minister.

The wait-and-watch policy of Washington, DC, in negating the anti-Modi visa policy does not augur well. It is necessary that the Obama regime changes its outlook towards Mr Modi now.
