Flawed decision

Nimai Charan Swain

Sir — India’s decision to support a resolution in the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, condemning Israel for using ‘disproportionate force’ against the Palestinians,  resulting in the death of innocent civilians including disabled persons in Gaza, was unwise. It is pertinent to ask the international community, including India, why the dastardly act of killing three Israeli teenagers, by Hamas, the hardened terror outfit ruling Gaza, had not been condemned in a firm voice. Had this been done, it could have put pressure on Hamas and the bloodshed thereafter could have been avoided.

In India, some pseudo-intellectuals and self-proclaimed rights activists staged protests at different places and some opposition parties tried to prevail upon the Government to adopt a resolution condemning Israel for the killings in Gaza. Can our national interest be best served in supporting HamasIJ Is there any instance of West Asian countries, including the Gulf nations, supporting India during various Pakistan-sponsored terror strikesIJ
