Flawed allocation

Bal Govind

Sir — This refers to the report, “Coal allotments illegal: SC” (August 26). Though the Supreme Court has deemed the coal block allocations to be illegal, it has not cancelled the allocations yet.

This has created huge uncertainty. It is not clear if the blocks will now be operated by Coal India ltd, which has a monopoly in the sector. Also, if CIl will takes over, then reforming the coal sector is essential. Either way, in the short-term, investors will be vary about putting their money here.

The only good thing about the Supreme Court decision is that coal blocks allocated for ultra mega power projects will only be used for those projects. They cannot be diverted elsewhere like some companies had sought to do.
