Fighting disease

PN Saxena

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Growing concerns on TB” (May 13). The editorial has aptly raised concerns about a report published by the British medical journal, lancet, which has projected an alarming situation about the spread of tuberculosis (TB), which is infected by microbes that resist the drugs and and kill people. What is most worrisome is that TB is a disease which can spread by human contact very soon.

Hence, TB infection control measures are essential to prevent its spread. To achieve the same, BCG vaccination must be made compulsory. Renewed efforts must be made for effective diagnostics, therapy and vaccination of this disease. It is a sad story that, despite many advancements, the spread of this disease is expected to grow by 8.9 per cent by 2040.

Advanced measures need to be taken urgently. Prevention is  better than cure. Compulsory vaccination, healthy nutrition and other medical precautions are the need of the hour.
