False allegations

SP Shukla Centre for Policy Analysis, KG Suresh

Sir — This refers to the article, “Too serious to be brushed aside” (June 2) by KG Suresh. We would like to point out that the Centre for Policy Analysis is not a JNU campus organisation nor is it an organisation sponsored by certain elements in the JNU, as suggested in the article. The reference to the CPA in the context of the wild allegations of “anti-national activities” is a grave mistake, if not deliberate mischief.

The CPA is an independent trust dedicated to an alternative vision of Indian polity and society. It believes in the Idea of an inclusive India that is the most precious legacy of the freedom struggle. It is dedicated to promote constructive, inclusive and serious discourse on issues of national and international importance. It receives no funds from any outside source nor has it any hidden agenda.

Our activities and funding are totally transparent and we need no certification from any self- appointed votary of warped exclusionary and jingoistic concept of ‘nationalism’.

KG Suresh replies: No specific allegation has been levelled against the organisation in question in the article. If the CPA is taking objection by inference, then I have as much reason to object to its reference to the “self-appointed votaries of warped exclusionary and jingoistic nationalism”, unless it is an admission of guilt.

As for the facts, it is established that both Ms Anuradha Chenoy and Ms Seema Mustafa, along with others, attended and addressed the two-day international conference on Kashmir in Muzaffarabad on May 28, 2011, organised by Ghulam Nabi Fai, the convicted Pakistani intelligence agent and executive director of the Kashmiri American Council/Kashmir Centre, where anti-India statements were loudly voiced by many participants.

As per the CPA’s website, the organisation has held public meetings. Half-baked facts and wild allegations of human rights abuses in J&K were levelled against Indian security forces without making any reference whatsoever to the massive human rights violations indulged in by the Pakistan-aided terrorists.

To cite from one such resolution, “Kashmiri women are degraded and humiliated by security forces in the State under the pretext of security checks every day. Rape continues to be a major instrument of oppression with the police refusing to register cases and bring the guilty to book.”

Another resolution (again available on the website) blames the security forces for killings of youth, without mentioning a word about militancy or Pakistan’s role and virtually giving a clean chit to militant outfits and separatists leaders.
