Letter to the Editor

Fake devotion

Azhar A Khan

Sir — This refers to the editorial, ‘Killings not justified’ (July 1). The editorial hits the nail on the head that the violence has come despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warnings. The gory incidents of lynching by some self-appointed cow protectors are going on unabated in several States, in a society that is known for its communal harmony and ‘unity in diversity’ motto.

The editorial is spot on, in observing that the lunatic fringe, in an otherwise civilised, cultured and educated Indian society, is responsible for such an anarchic situation that has claimed several human lives — Mohammad Akhlaq, Pehlu Khan and Junaid Khan. It is up to the State Governments to take stringent action against those who are taking law into their own hands in the name of cow protection, while our political class always desists from making statements, thereby causing an adverse bearing on India’s global image.
