This refers to the article, “The fate of a visionary diplomat” (April 26) by Claude Arpi. Thanks to his efforts, we are reminded of our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s ‘historic blunders’ vis-a-vis China and its invasion and occupation of Tibet, contemptuously disregarding our ‘visionary’, lhasa-based diplomat’s serious warnings about the double-faced policy of China’s generals to grab Tibet. Being an impulsive, fundamentalist architect of Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai, Nehru could not see the expansionist agenda of China until its occupation of Indian territory in the North-East in October 1962. This Chinese betrayal was a deep shock to him. We have to be friendly with our next-door neighbour. At the same time, we cannot afford to lower our guard.
