Letter to the Editor

End interference

Uttam K Bhowmik
Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Empowering the honest” (November 2). In the name of protecting the law, lawmakers break the rules habitually and use bureaucrats as political weapons.
As a result, a few corrupt babus form strong bonds with political parties to gain monetary advantages and other illicit benefits. On the other hand, honest public servants are penalised (through transfers etc) if their work hurts political interests.
In recent times, we have seen police officer Damayanti Sen, who was in charge of the Park Street rape case, transferred out for her brave remark in favour of the victim. Sub-divisional Magistrate Durga Shakti Nagpal, who was fighting the sand mafia in Uttar Pradesh, was suspended by the Government of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
Politicians also often use bureaucrats to do their dirty work. later, if something goes wrong, they distance themselves from the civil servants. The Supreme Court’s order will help end the political interference in the administrative system.
