Sir — Perhaps for the first time during his countrywide poll-campaign, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has pledged to free Parliament from tainted politicians, even if the ‘dirty’ lawmakers belong to the BJP or its allies. This is a welcome statement.
But it is time that Mr Modi also clears his stand on taking initiatives to disallow wrong persons from being elected to Parliament. This can only be done through massive poll reforms, deferred for decades in the name of a (never-to-arrive) political consensus. The Election Commission has made repeated recommendations which have been ignored, and a report of the Dinesh Goswami committee on electoral reforms is gathering dust.
