Easier to be opaque than to purge the system

Uttam K Bhowmik

This refers to the article, “Golden chance for our system to come clean” (June 25) by A Surya Prakash.

Political parties in our country consider themselves above the law. If ordinary citizens are required to furnish details of their wealth and sources of income, why should political parties shy, nay vehemently resist, from doing soIJ The Central Information Commission's order to bring all political parties under the ambit of the Right to Information Act is reasonable. The people have a right to know how transparent and accountable the parties they support are.

Here was a good opportunity to include some much-needed electoral reforms and induce some transparency in the functioning of political parties. Unfortunately, this is not to be as political parties of all hues and creed, have conspired to oppose the CIC order. The biggest disappointment is the BJP which, though it claims to be a ‘party with a difference', has shown to be not so different from the Congress on this issue.
