Sir — This refers to the article, “Economic rescue plan is no rocket science” (March 1) by Ashok Malik. The Congress-led UPA Government and those supporting it are waiting to pounce on Mr Narendra Modi for his ‘economics’ which can be written on the ‘back of a stamp’.
Any policy decision taken by a Prime Minister will certainly hurt a few sections in any case, but the head of the Government has to take those decisions in the larger interest of the country. Mr Modi too will have to take tough and even unpopular decisions if he becomes the Prime Minister.
However, at this moment, no leader would want to displease even a single voter, let alone an entire segment. This is election time, after all. Neither Mr Modi nor the BJP is promising a radical departure in economic management. Honest, effective and timely tweaking of existing regulations can change the numbers quite radically, without those radical remedies discussed on paper or openly. That is the right way forward. We can expect the BJP-led NDA regime, if it comes to power, to take effective measures which it is not enumerating for now.
