Letter to the Editor

Different strokes for different folks

JP Gupta

This refers to the editorial "Nobody killed Aarushi" (October 13). While the media is sparing no effort to discuss, debate and deliberate why the unfortunate parents of Aarushi Talwar have been found not guilty of the gruesome murder of their daughter none in the mainstream media felt the need to debate the judgement in the Godhra train massacre where some of the convicts' sentences were reduced from death to life imprisonment.

The Sabarmati Express bogey which was burnt, killing all 59 karsewaks returning from Ayodhya, never attracted the sympathy or concern of either the media nor did it see the leading lights of civil society petitioning the courts for justice and ultimately none of the perpetrators of this ghastly crime was awarded the death penalty. The mainstream media's silence is quite understandable, though. After all, the same media continued to spew venom on Narendra Modi for the post-Godhra riots despite the evidence that his Government did everything it could to bring the situation under control but has never been noticed showing any sympathy for 59 innocent passengers on that train of death. It is utterly condemnable that radical elements set fire to the train because they could not bear to see Hindu activists assert their Constitutional right to participate in an agitation legally and even more unfortunate that so-called secularists have by and large ignored the depravity and gravity of the crime.
