Desperate action

Nimai Charan Swain
Sir — Pakistan resorted to firing along the International Border and line of Control, callous to the ceasefire agreement and careless about the Simla Agreement. It has some dubious intent for this  unprovoked violence.
First, the internal situation in Pakistan is tense. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Government faced fierce protests and was on the brink of collapse.
Second, Pakistani authorities desire to push as many infiltrators as they can before the onset of winter, to perpetrate violence and unrest in  Kashmir and other parts of the country. It is true that our Army has foiled attempts at infiltration on many occasions. The nefarious design of Pakistan is to unleash terrorist strikes, and thus engage India in a proxy war.
Finally, after Mr Sharif’s failure at the United Nations to internationalise the Kashmir issue, Pakistan has out of despair and desperation launched the fresh onslaught.
