Derailing democracy

Sunil Pradhan

Sir — Recent events in Pakistan have been disturbing for India too. A peaceful neighbour is necessary for the normalisation of relations. There is no doubt that the current event couldn’t have happened without a green signal from the Pakistani Army.

Islamabad has a sound local administration and police system. It is not easy to just walk into the Red Zone of the capital. The protesters, led by Mr Imran Khan and Pakistani-Canadian cleric Tahir ul-Qadri, could have been stopped at the periphery of city. The Army was also ready for action. The question is: Why were the protesters allowed near the Prime Minister’s residence and the SecretariatIJ

It seems like the Army and the Inter-Services Intelligence has been acting against the democratically elected Nawaz Sharif Government. If the regime falls, there will be elections and a coalition is expected to form the Government. The Army will then pull strings. Eventually, whatever the outcome of the unrest in Pakistan, the people of that country will be the worst sufferers.
