Sir — This refers to the report, “Ready to move out of J&K: West Pakistan refugee panel” (November 11). It was shocking to read about the pitiable condition of nearly a lakh of Hindu refugees who came across to Jammu in 1947 from West Pakistan. They were denied citizenship rights by the Jammu & Kashmir Government for these long years. Their representatives recently met Union Government interlocutor, Dineshwar Sharma in Jammu. During the meeting, they even suggested that if the BJP-led Government cannot persuade their coalition party, PDP to grant them legitimate citizenship rights, they are ready to shift to any other part of the country.
The Modi Government is sensitive, responsive and people-friendly. One only hopes that it would promptly examine this humanitarian problem and relieve the prolonged suffering by conferring citizenship rights on them.
