Delayed justice

Sravana Ramachandran

Sir — The Supreme Court has set a one-year deadline for the lower courts to complete trials against lawmakers. If the trial court cannot meet the time-frame, it will have to explain the delay to the Chief Justice of the respective High Court.

In the decades since Independence, just a handful of politicians have been convicted on criminal charges. The fodder scam case against lalu Prasad dragged on for more than 17 years before a lower court convicted him. The law was twisted and misused to delay the trial and the verdict. lalu Prasad is out on bail now and is seeking relief from the higher courts. The matter must be decided at the earliest.
