Defining politics

R Narayanan

Sir — Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s opening speech in Parliament is an example of what parliamentary statesmanship is all about.

Neither the BJP’s extraordinary win in the 2014 general election nor the poor showing in Bihar can define Mr Modi’s poised stance today. It’s true that governance of a complex nation moulds the best leaders. This is the hallmark of a progressive democracy that eschews majoritarian mindsets.

In hindsight, had the BJP positioned the leader of Opposition from the Congress at the very inception of the current lok Sabha, to acknowledge the legitimate right to oppose, much of the acrimony across the aisles would have dissipated long back.

It would have also sent a larger message across the nation that politics is more about finding common ground in the grey and less about spending time and energy in delineating the white and the black.
