Sir — This refers to the recent news about a ban being mooted on ‘lingerie mannequins’ in Mumbai. While it seems a tad too harsh to say that the sight of ‘plastic flesh’ adorning shop windows has polluted the minds of today’s generation, it is also a fact that the advertising industry has turned out to be a male-dominated zone where women are treated as crass commodity.
Today, advertisements are more about ‘commercialisation’ of women than about the product which is being promoted through women models. Sometimes, the women are compared to the products. Vulgar insinuations are ceaselessly made in most of these advertisements. The cheap gimmicks of the media and advertisers are also greatly responsible for the way men regard the fair sex today.
If such advertisements are broadcast repeatedly, the male mindset will never change. Men will unfortunately continue to regard women as sex objects.
