Dangerous attitude

M Ratan

Sir— Tension between the ruling BJP and its opponents on the Indian Army chief’s firm stand to control insurgency in Jammu & Kashmir escalated when an academic, Partha Chatterjee, compared Gen Bipin Rawat with British colonial officer Reginald Dyer’s massacre of unarmed civilians in Jallianwala Bagh in 1919.

Instead of condemning this lunatic comparison, Opposition leaders mounted attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party for the alleged destruction of their “idea of India” and supporting the Indian Army. They even took the ruling party to task for the Central Bureau of Investigation’s raid on the houses and offices of promoters of a private television news channel for alleged corrupt practices.

It appears that even after three years of Modi Government, opposition parties have not reconciled to the bitter fact of their electoral defeat. This attitude of confrontation is undemocratic and dangerous. A more dignified and mature modus operandi must be explored for better political interaction and consensual cooperation for the good of a developing nation.
