Custodial violence

Jubel DCruz

Sir — The recurrence of deaths on account of custodial violence in India can be attributed to the fact that action is rarely taken against the guilty cop. The police force is supposed to uphold the law; instead it routinely misuses its powers. Instances of attacks by the police in India on citizens are reported in the media almost everyday.

The police has tremendous powers but these powers should be used to maintain law and order and render assistance to the public and not harass or kill them unnecessarily like in the case of Byculla inmate, Manjula Shetye who was tortured and killed in police custody in June 2017. Nearly everyday we hear of custodial violence in police stations and there is still no inquiry against them.
