Letter to the Editor

Crush insurgency

Nimai Charan Swain

Sir — This refers to your editorial, “No end to bloodbath” (December 26). India is confronted with internal violence and terror from different kinds of rebel forces like left-wing extremists in the coastal belts and tribal-infested regions of the country; militants in Jammu & Kashmir and rising insurgency in North-East States. The recent dastardly act of butchery by Bodo militants in Assam, which killed more than 70 innocent people, indicates that the militants are aggressively resorting to retaliation for the killing of their own by the security forces.

In spite of the availability of intelligence inputs, the Assam Government headed by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was callous. Had the Government taken pre-emptive measures, the horrendous violence could have been avoided. As it appears, the Union Government is determined to crush insurgency in Assam. It should be borne in mind that internal stability and peace are inevitable for the progress and prosperity of the country.
