Cruel act

M Ratan

Sir — The ongoing agitation in Tamil Nadu against the Supreme Court ban on Jallikattu is disturbing and shocking. One cannot recall any similar protest demonstration on any issue concerning people’s lives, their survival, human rights, gender equality etc.

What was incredible is that besides common Tamilians, even celebrities and intellectuals  endorsed the emotional posture which brought thousands at the Marina beach and other promenades in Chennai against a clearly cruel sport of Jallikattu. How could a generally mild, humane mass of people enjoy a cruel handling of a poor animal for funIJ By no stretch of imagination, such ill-treatment of a bull, could be regarded as an important part of one’s cultural heritage.
