Crimes against women proof of social decay

Azhar A Khan

This refers to the report “Moga shames nation” (May 1). The shocking incident, in which a 13-year-old girl and her mother were allegedly pushed off a moving bus in Moga, is yet another addition to the appalling list of violent crimes against women. Such incidents happen unabated across the country, despite Government efforts to make to improve the safety of women.

It is not clear if the daughter-mother duo jumped off the bus or were forcibly thrown out, as no eyewitness has mustered the courage to tell the truth. However, cases of violent crimes being committed against women while the public is silent onlooker, have become ubiquitous.

Our lackadaisical attitude in this case is an indication of social decay. It is incumbent upon the Government to take stringent action and bring the offenders to book. This will hopefully deter others from committing such a shameful crime.
