Corrupt practices

TKM Kumbalamchuvattil

Sir — This refers to the report, “Cannot seek votes in name of religion, caste: SC” (January 3). The apex court’s judgement, soliciting votes in elections on grounds of race, religion, caste, community or language as “corrupt practice” under electoral provisions, is rational. It needs to be welcomed.

Many political parties in the country are functioning solely by playing the religion/caste/community card. In light of this, the Supreme Court’s order is welcome and the Government and also the Election Commission must take appropriate action against such political outfits at the earliest.
