Correct opinion

TKM Kumbalamchuvattil

Sir — Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu’s observation, that religion-based quota system is unconstitutional as it imperils the genuine interest of the country, is convincing. And, his claim that quota is vital to the economically backward communities, irrespective of their religion, is rational.

The basic reason for quota is poverty, and poverty is not confined to any particular religion/caste for obvious reasons. Hence, a blanket policy, allowing quota benefits to the entire community sans segregating the economically well, is unethical. Concisely, the regime should frame unbiased reservation policies sans caste/religious discrimination, solely considering the economic status of the candidates.
