Sir — This refers to the latest Wikileaks report which reveals that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi acted as a ‘middleman’ in the proposed sale of Swedish Viggen fighter aircraft to India in the 1970s. This report clearly points a finger not only at Rajiv Gandhi but also his mother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The charges levelled in the report are very serious and make one wonder whether the indigenisation of Armed Forces was deliberately kept at a slow pace to ensure that dependence on foreign arms firms remained intact. The expose also indicates complicity of the first family of Congress in corrupt practices.
It will not be surprising if Wikileaks revelations resurrect the ghost of Bofors also. Given the prevailing ‘anti-corruption’ sentiment in the country, the Congress must be ready to face difficult days ahead.
