Congress's decline

J Akshay

Sir — The Congress’s bad phase, triggered by its worst ever performance in the general election, seems to be far from over. Bickering even about who was the first to flash the divorce document, the National Conference and the Congress have formally parted ways.

A crisis is also brewing in Maharashtra and Assam where senior Ministers have quit the Government, and revolted against their respective Chief Ministers in those States. Add to this the party’s organisational weaknesses in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and Congress finds itself in a pretty mess.

The internal strife and turmoil underlines the total loss of authority of the so-called Congress high command. The writ of party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi clearly does not hold sway, as the rebels have targeted Chief Ministers who are known to have the support of both these leaders.
