Congress must be wary of impeachment impact

KV Seetharamaiah

This refers to the article, “A judicial conundrum” (April 24) by VK Bahuguna. There is no merit in the impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra moved by the Congress and its comrades. A judge can be impeached on proven charges of misbehavior. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has rightly found no merit in the impeachment move. Naidu gave vivid analysis of the factors that led him to reject the motion.   He pointed out that the signatory MPs are unsure of their own case since they used phrases like “the fact and circumstances”, “may have been”, “he too was likely”, “appears to have” and so on. The Congress failed to point out the misbehavior of the CJI.

In fact, the Congress sees division everywhere. The two-nation theory got the support of the Congress; hence, Pakistan was created out of India. In Karnataka, the lingayat community was divided with hopes to strengthen its vote-bank. Now, the grand old party wants to divide the judiciary. Having failed to get what it wants in so far as impeachment of the CJI is concerned, the Congress is now mulling to move the top court.   Perhaps, it is hopeful to impeach the CJI with support from senior judges like J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan lokur and Kurian Joseph. No wonder, if the Congress asks the Supreme Court to entrust the case to these four judges only. However, if the Congress thinks that it can set in motion a collision course among judges of the apex court, it must be prepared to be disappointed once again.
