Congress must apologise on Ishrat Jahan matter

Sagar Singh

This refers to the editorial, “Reality of Ishrat Jahan” (February 12). David Coleman Headley’s startling revelation that Ishrat Jahan was a lashkar-e-Tayyeba operative demands that the Congress apologise to the nation in general, and the BJP in particular, for targeting the then Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi. Earlier in 2010, during an interrogation by the National Investigation Agency, David Headley had reiterated that Ishrat Jahan was an leT operative, but the then UPA Government, which was in power, kept the truth under the carpet and ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation to also follow the same path, so as to appease the minority community and keep its vote-bank intact.

While it is the prerogative of the Opposition to criticise the ruling party on matters that it thinks to be inappropriate, it should not be done by carping and twisting facts, so as to make it look the other way. The Congress’s sole objective is to tarnish the image of the ruling party and gain political mileage.
