Sir — It is distressing to note that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who secured an overwhelming electoral victory on the wings of his great communication skills, suddenly seems to have gone into a silent mode, almost Manmohan Singh-like. It is true that he did warn the people of some imminent tough decisions a little while ago, but when a major hike in railway passenger and freight fares was announced recently, all hell broke loose.
Mr Modi let the Railways and the Finance Ministers explain the inevitability of the NDA decision, instead of talking to the people himself and seeking the public’s understanding and cooperation, through a televised speech. One has no doubt that that Mr Modi’s timely intervention in explaining the difficult economic situation would have reduced the damage.
