Combating hate

Meghana A

Sir — The recent terror attack on the residents of Paris is the second time this year that Parisians have become victims of terrorist violence. The year began with the Charlie Hebdo tragedy and an attack on a kosher supermarket. Towards the end of 2015, the same violence and fear have returned to haunt the streets of Paris.

French security authorities must have been aware of the possibility of the newjihadi terror, especially in the context of the country’s involvement in the ongoing Syrian conflict.

Yet, there is a realistic recognition that not every cafe, not every concert hall, not every football stadium, not every school can be protected at all times every day.

The French Government has reacted firmly and strongly, and society at large has kept its cool. That is why Paris is Europe’s most enchanting and celebrated city. The spirit of Paris will live on.
