This refers to the editorial, “Containing forest fires” (May 3). Forest fires in Uttarakhand and in some parts of Himachal Pradesh have destroyed a large number of trees, especially in the hilly State. This is a cause of concern as trees are responsible for attracting rainfall as well as for providing respite from heat conditions.
Although rescue operations are on to douse the fire; the cause of the spread of fire is dry vegetation, twigs and pine needles in the path of fire. One of the solutions to deal with forest fires is to remove dry vegetation, twigs etc away from the path of fire.
