Child labour

Sujit De

Sir — Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi said: “Poverty does not breed child labour but it is child labour that perpetuates poverty.” He reiterated that child labour perpetuated poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and population growth. This thought troubled me, for my entire life I assumed that child labour was a corollary of poverty. Nevertheless, I could not dismiss Satyarthi’s view because of my utmost respect for the man who has been struggling all his life to stop children from being exploited as labour instead of attending schools. Satyarthi broke a long standing myth that poverty causes child labour. The truth is, among other things, child labour causes poverty and unemployment. As a matter of fact, every child’s entry into the job market actually closes the job opportunity for an adult.
