Letter to the Editor

Changing roles

Yvonne Fernando

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Setting House in order” (August 7). As expected, the BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu has become the Vice President of this country. Naidu is known for his oratorical skills endowed with a silver tongue and is indeed a very good parliamentarian who used to play the role of a troubleshooter whenever heated arguments emanate from the Opposition. More than anything, he is recognised as one who maintains friendship with all political leaders cutting party lines.

One only wishes that Naidu quickly drops the saffron cloak, and wears the mantle of a statesman that has now fallen on him and act impartially in the Rajya Sabha with parliamentary wisdom so that he can pass in history as one of the best ex-officio Chairmen of the Rajya Sabha.
