Letter to the Editor

Centre and apex court must work in tandem

Azhar A Khan

This refers to the editorial, “Finally, MoP for judges” (March 22). It portends well that the Centre and the Supreme Court Collegium have reached halfway towards finalising the controversial Memorandum of Procedure for judges' appointments on the posts lying vacant for far too long in the High Courts as well as the subordinate courts. There was a huge pendency of cases and judges were stressed. This was evident in former Chief Justice of India TS Thakur’s breakdown at a public address.

The editorial has hit the nail on the head while suggesting that the Union Government and the Collegium will have to work in tandem to tackle the huge backlog of cases, particularly in lower courts, as the initiation of litigation begins therein. Moreover, the inadequacy of infrastructure and state-of-the art technology also account for this abysmal plight. Hence, reforms at the subordinate court level must be kept at the forefront.
