CBI cautioned

Ganapathi Bhat

Sir — This refers to the report, “Police agency should not sit in judgement over policy: PM” (November 12). The Prime Minister has at last done some plain-speak on the functional aspects of the Central Bureau of Investigation. His comments assume significance in the wake of the Gauhati High Court’s order questioning the very existence of the agency, and an earlier Supreme Court’s observation that the CBI is a “caged parrot”.

Mr Singh must have had his own Government’s experience in mind when he dished out lessons to the investigation agency. That the CBI has to remove its tinted glasses to weigh its investigative options, was clear in the beleaguered Prime Minister’s remarks.

The CBI should not smell a rat all the time. Mr Singh has indicated that some of the UPA regime’s decisions were indeed risky. He has, in the process, cautioned that the CBI has to go slow in certain sensitive matters.
