Can Nirbhaya now rest in peace finally?

Meera Mishra

This refers to the report, “Finally, Nirbhaya rests in peace” (May 6). I wonder why people are celebrating the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Nirbhaya rape and murder case. This is not for the first time that death penalty has been awarded in a rape case where the victim died. An impartial look at this case would reveal that it stood out for three reasons. First, the indomitable courage showed by Nirbhaya to describe the brutality of the rapists. Second, the compassion displayed by her male friend who stood by her. Third, the brutality of the juvenile, who has been released after serving his probation period.

In the frenzied reaction to the apex court’s verdict, all these points were underscored. Even Nirbhaya’s parents claimed that they will finally be able to sleep peacefully. ReallyIJ The juvenile, who was equally responsible for the crime, is free and continues to live in anonymity. Similarly, there has not been a word of gratitude for Nirbhaya’s friend. Finally, there’s no mention about the courage shown by Nirbhaya. What are we celebrating indeedIJ
