Letter to the Editor

Cameron's exit laudable and reminiscent of past

Sagar Singh

This refers to the editorial, “Breaking with Europe” (June 25). Britain has finally decided to leave the European Union by snapping the 43-year-old relation with it. While young voters wanted to ‘Remain’ with the EU, older voters preferred to ‘leave’ in large numbers. Whatever may be the consequences of this referendum on the EU's 27 remaining members, it is praiseworthy that British Prime Minister David Cameron, a votary of the pro-EU group, announced that he’ll step down from his post in October.

In 1990, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher too stepped down from her post following differences with her party MPs over the European Economic Union. In India, no Minister or a Prime Minister, with the sole exception of lal Bahadur Shastri, who as Railway Minister, resigned following a rail accident in Tamil Nadu in 1956, owns responsibility either himself/herself or on behalf of his/her party, let alone resigning. This shows that Western countries are not only mature in their freedom of expression, but also in their thoughts.
