Bureacratic roadblocks in India-US ties must go

Ganapathi Bhat

This refers to the editorial, “Deepening India-US ties” (September 24). Prime Minister Narendra Modi inherited a tough and sober legacy from the UPA. The much pampered nuclear deal was in tatters and the deep mistrust between New Delhi and Washingtonm, DC had crippled ties between the two countries, leading to the stalling of developmental works and investments from the US. Mr Modi had only one way out — to revive bilateral ties, which were begging for attention. He took the bull by the horns by beginning in right earnest — visiting the US and bringing US President Barack Obama to India.

The US has the wherewithal to contribute to the Prime Minister's skill development dream — a point which Mr Modi will hardly miss during his five-day visit to the US. Now that the India-US strategic commercial dialogue has taken off with a flourish, and the defence deal involving the attack and heavy lift helicopters signed, Mr Modi has to ensure hassle-free implementation of India-US projects sans all the bureaucratic road blocks.
