This refers to the editorial, “The pilgrim's progress” (January 18). The abolition of Haj subsidy by the Modi Government conforms to its principles of justice to all and appeasement of none. This is also in line with the Supreme Court judgement to do away with the subsidy. The apex court’s order has been obeyed about four years ahead of the date prescribed by it. A sum of Rs 700 crore, which was given to Indian Muslim pilgrim going to Mecca, will now be used to empower girls from minorities in matters of education, providing job opportunities.
Union Minister of Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that his Ministry is planning Central schools in 100 places which would have 30 per cent students from minorities and 70 per cent from others for ‘samaveshi viikas’. Diversion of subsidy amount only for minorities has not unshackled the minority appeasements altogether. Majorities and minorities should be treated alike in any matter, including empowerment.
There should be no discrimination on the basis of gender or religion. If minorities girls have to be empowered, it should be so to the majorities girls too. In fact, in India, majorities have grievances over minorities. This should be remedied. Majority should be on par with minorities, all working together towards the establishment of an egalitarian society.
