Brave Afghans

Saad Ullah Khan

Sir — Though the Indian sub-continent is focussing on the Indian general election, the Afghan presidential election is no less important. This is for the very first time that a new Government is going to be formed in Afghanistan by a genuine democratic transition.

The overwhelming voter turnout and the scarcity of ballot papers at certain polling booths are signs of a vibrant democracy. They have sent a message to the world that democracy has now gained a strong place in Afghanistan, with religion-based fundamentalism having no place. As it is a fact that a peaceful and politically independent Afghanistan is necessary for the development of South Asia, countries like India, who are among its largest investors, must do everything to support and maintain the democratically elected Government in Kabul. Moreover, we must not forget that Afghanistan is the gateway which links South Asia to Central Asia, providing one of the best trade routes.
